Iraq to build new city in Basra governorate - News network
08 June 2017
Iraq is planning to construct a new city for its citizens in the Southern Basra governorate under a programme to tackle housing shortage, an Iraqi news network reported on Thursday.
The new city, called the Safwan project, is located near the Southwestern town of Safwan close to the border with Kuwait, Al-Forat News said.
It quoted Basra's governor Majid Al-Nasrawi as saying the Safwan city would comprise nearly 9,000 houses and be built on land already allocated by the governorate.
"The area of the Safwan project is nearly double the existing Safwan town area. This project is intended to resolve a housing supply crisis in the governorate," he said without mentioning how the project would be funded.
Iraq has offered other housing projects to developers on an investment basis given its cash problems caused by low oil prices and internal hostilities, according to media reports.
