Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Expo 2020 Dubai on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to maximize the use of clean energy and deliver a sustainable World Expo.

The utility has been appointed as Official Sustainable Energy Partner for the six-month event, according to a press statement from Expo 2020 Dubai.

DEWA will provide the event with electricity and water from October 2020 to April 2021, excluding electricity generated on-site, the statement said, adding that the event aims to have 50 percent of its power needs supplied from renewable energy sources.

The statement said the total cost of DEWA's electricity projects to support Expo 2020 Dubai will be 420 million dirhams ($114.35 million).

The utility is building three 132/11kilovolt (kV) substations, named Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity after the three subthemes of the expo, with 45 kilometers of high-voltage (132kV) cables.

Additionally, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will have a dedicated 400MW capacity for the expo.

Expo 2020 will run from October 2020 to April 2021 and is expected to attract 25 million visitors.
